Nobles were often the vassels of their monarchs, but not always. Sometimes they were just rich people. But they could also give away part of their land to their own vassels who would farm the land.
Without the nobles, There would be no army for the wars. They also micromanaged the peasants and serfs that worked their land.

What did They Receive?
They could collect taxes on behalf of the king or queen and they could keep a portion of it. They also received loyalty of their vassels, which meant that they could summon their vassels to fight for them or their lord during times of war. Also, the lords protected them and provided them with food during times of famine and war.
